Why The Long Island Media Task Force Exists
- The Founding Fathers created our Constitution offering Free Speech and Freedom of the Press on the belief that it takes an informed and involved citizenry to make a democracy work…
BUT: Thanks to media bankruptcies, weakened regulations, consolidated media ownership and social media proliferation: truth, knowledge and accurate news information have become harder and harder to find.
- Social media platforms now reach 80% of the American people and serve as the prime news source for millions of Americans, particularly the young…
BUT: Social media algorithms deliberately restrict the voices and news people hear, and instead reinforce already held beliefs in ways users barely understand.
Social media has speeded up the amount of time it takes to distribute information to practically nothing…
BUT: In the rush for news to be instantaneously available, the concepts of truth, accuracy and fairness have been left behind.
- The number of places people can get information has grown…
BUT: Roughly 90% of news that reaches the average American through traditional media is controlled by 5 multi-national news corporations, and local news has either been diminished or has disappeared in thousands of communities across this country.
- Nassau and Suffolk Counties have more than 2.8 million people; which could rank it as the third largest city in the US, just ahead of Chicago…
BUT: Long Island has virtually no local broadcast outlets with local news, and weekly newspapers through the area have either folded, are struggling desperately to survive and are operated by a handful of local owners, significantly reducing local coverage.
The Long Island Media Task Force (LIMTF) is a non-profit, non-partisan group of media-junkie volunteers who joined forces to fight for better news information delivery across the Island, NY State and our nation. We welcome any and all mediaphiles who share our goals.
